Scitex America's $39,995 EverSmart Pro scanner for the Macintosh provides the quality of a drum and the flexibility of a flatbed. The scanner's XY Technology moves the charge-coupled device both horizontally and vertically across the scanning bed to increase resolution without having to rely on software interpolation. The EverSmart Pro scans at true optical resolutions to 3,175 ppi without software interpolation, so a 4-by-5-inch transparency could be scanned at 300 ppi and enlarged by more than 1,000 percent without losing detail. The interpolation algorithm supports a maximum resolution of 8,200 ppi without diminishing quality. The scanner works with 1,500MHz PowerPC, PCI-based workstations with 500MB of available hard disk space and System 7.5.3 or later. The EverSmart Pro features a 12-by-17-inch glass surface for originals.

Linotype-Hell's $5,495 Saphir Ultra flatbed color scanner provides features and functionality comparable to its competition but includes a superior photo-editing software package that distinguishes the overall product. The VisuaLab software includes outstanding color-correction features and provides users with comprehensive management control over the entire scanner. The VisuaLab software allows users to make image corrections based on color range, contrast, saturation and dynamic range and includes TextBridge OCR, Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and ScanOpen Lite software. The Saphir Ultra provides superior interpolation at high resolution rates but surprisingly inferior images at 2,000-dpi and below resolutions. Also, the interface is difficult to navigate and the image-sharpening features are generally insufficient.

UMAX jumps into the fire

UMAX Technologies' $1,199 UMAX PowerLook 1100 is an outsatnding value but is noisy. The device, which is essentially a PowerLook III reworked to accommodate FireWire bus technology, is one of the first flatbed scanners to take advantage of FireWire. The 1100 comes standard with a transparency cover for scanning slides, a feature that costs as much as $250 in other products. However, users should be aware that sandwiching transparencies between two pieces of glass often causes a problem involving Newton rings.
