Finding common ground

Article Abstract:

Art departments and prepress organizations need to communicate effectively to establish and maintain the kinds of realtionships that result in the the best products. Conflicts that have always existed between the two are currently being exacerbated by the emergence of new technologies such as digital proofing, electronic file transmission and direct-to-plate printing and by compressed production cycles and blurred preflight responsibilities. Prepress organizations need to take resposibility for small fixes without necessarily charging for them, and art departments should take the initiative to bring service bureau representatives into closer collaboration.

Article Abstract:

GE Industrial Systems has instituted a corporate intranet that enables its far flung network of engineering and marketing facilities to improve communication and productivity while reducing travel expenses and bolstering overall employee morale. The site is called WebCity, and is designed on the model of a metropolis, with various buildings being designated as the location of different product production, finance, and marketing facilities. Digital video

Article Abstract:

Digital video is already in widespread use on the Web. However, Web publishers are constrained because low-bandwidth users still represent the majority. Video clips have to be kept short because downloading takes too much time for most users. Another problem involves complexity because various options require different plug-ins, which can be confusing for users. Many broadcasters favor RealVideo because it is the easiest way to reach large audiences, but most say Apple's QuickTime delivers a better image.
