First Look: PostScript laser printing gets more personal

Article Abstract:

Three new PostScript printers are targeted for small, 2-3 person workgroups and single users. All three printers are 300 dots-per-inch, 4-pages-per-minute printers. Users cannot go wrong buying any one of these printers. QMS's QMS-PS 410 is the most convenient for a network of integrated Apple Computer Macintoshes and IBM PCs; it costs about $2,795. The QMS-PS has the standard 35-font LaserWriter set plus Garamond, Garamond Light, and Helvetica Condensed typefaces. CC Technologies's BusinessLaser Printer II (BPL) comes with an AppleTalk and SCSI port on a plug-in card. The BLP II has a light-emitting diode engine; it can print to the top, bottom, and side edges of the page. The BLP II and IIS cost about $2,299 and $2,799, respectively. Apple Computer's Personal LaserWriter NT, $3,299, has the 35 LaserWriter Plus fonts plus the IBM PC Extended Character Set. It includes a second processor to handle AppleTalk and serial port communications.

PC Publisher Kit Series II (controller board): Imagen Corp

Article Abstract:

The $1,995 PC Publisher Kit Series II controller board, from Imagen Corp, when combined with HP Laserjet Series IIs, gives desktop publishers who use PCs a PostScript-Compatible printer that is fast at graphics. The board works with any laser printer that incorporates a Canon SX or CX engine. The product reportedly did not print downloadable Bitstream fonts, which were used in a test. Results, using a Ventura document, were 'mediocre' in terms of time saved.
