Font fear? Putting to rest your outline-font anxieties

Article Abstract:

Several user fears about the impacts of the imminent 'font war' between Adobe Systems' Adobe PostScript outline-font format and the TrueType outline-font technology from Apple Computer and Microsoft Corp are assuaged. Microsoft and Apple claim TrueType provides superior type to PostScript from laser printers that cost less. Apple will include TrueType in the Macintosh System 7.0, while Microsoft includes Truetype in OS/2 Presentation Manager and Windows. IBM will include Adobe's PostScript-based Adobe Type Manager outline-font technology and Type 1 font format in the Systems Application Architecture. The four fears are: Adobe will be eclipsed (Adobe is too successful), two standards will exist (actually, there are none), TrueType will be too good, and Adobe users will be stuck with old technology (the primary issue is output quality); there will be too many font choices (there already are).

Type City font cards

Article Abstract:

Bitstream Inc's Type City is a plug-in cartridge for expanding the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet bit-mapped font collection. The credit-card-sized font cards can be inserted into slots in an expandable-base cartridge. Most cartridges require the purchase of additional $150 to $400 cartridges that often contain undesired fonts. Type City allows the user to save money by purchasing only those add-on cards that have the fonts actually needed. Each card contains six to 12 bit-mapped fonts. The list price is $379 for the cartridge and Deli add-on card, and $99 or $129 for each additional add-on card. The Type City base cartridge has 35 bit-mapped fonts and works with all the LaserJet II series and III, IIID and IIISi models. Type City combines useful text and headline fonts in a good range of point sizes, and it is a great value for the money.
