Fonts for all printers: Bitsteam Macfontware

Article Abstract:

PC-font supplier Bitstream Inc makes its debut on the Apple Macintosh scene with Macfontware, a collection of 10 type packages. Consider Macfontware only if you use a combination of PostScript, Quickdraw or the Qume Crystalprint Publisher printers. Because Adobe offers most of the same faces as Macfontware, and they print more cleanly on laser printers, Adobe fonts are the better choice for PostScript printing only. Macfontware's five serif families are Bitstream's own Charter, ITC Galliard, ITC Souvenir, ITC Garamond Book and Baskerville. Bitstream's Headlines 1 and Headlines 2 packages are strictly for informal uses. The sans serif packages News Gothic and Futura Medium work best as display text. The tenth font package is Letter Gothic. A four-font Macfontware package costs $169 and requires a Macintosh Plus, SE or II and 512Kbytes of RAM.

Macreations Inc's $149 Tycho 1.0.3 computer graphics software makes creating tables less tedious. It has a flexible grid, style sheets and special sections which make building tables as easy as entering text. It is the best Mac program currently available for easy, all-text tables, particularly if the table is to be placed in a document. While Tycho does not have a wide variety of graphics available, users can create borders of varying widths around cells or sections. Drop shadows are another possibility. Tycho provides a palette of 146 'dingbats,' such as arrows, checks, stars and circles in order to stylize response boxes in a table. Tycho requires 1Mbyte of RAM and System 4.2 or later.
