Get a RIP

Article Abstract:

Companies considering buying a wide-format printer for creating design comps or poster-sized promotional materials also need raster image processors (RIP) for processing rasterized images. The RIPs that come bundled with most printers tend to be low-cost, so users should augment them with richer-featured programs suited to their output needs. RIPs capable of driving more than one printer, or more than one type of printer, are preferable. The company may need to print diverse materials on both printers and copiers, such as posters, presentation hand-outs and place cards. For example, Colorbus's Cyclone II RIP can drive two copiers from any six manufacturers, in addition to ColorSpan, HP and Encad wide-format printers.

Leaping into PDF

Article Abstract:

Adobe System's Portable Document Format (PDF) enables document-intensive organizations to exchange electronic files while maintaining the page formatting. Adobe did not target PDF for prepress, but publishers are finding many applications for the technology. PDF has its limitations, but is excellent for proofing, translation and streamlining prepress production. SS Studios, a Union, NJ prepress service, uses PDF throughout its production processes. Scholin Brothers Printing, of Webster Groves, MS, uses PDF to troubleshoot PostScript files, proof short-run jobs and rip hard-to-output files. TC Advertising, Baltimore, MD, uses PDF to minimize preflighting, print difficult files and speed production.

Scholastic aptitude test: FM screening technology comes of age

Article Abstract:

Frequency-modulation (FM) screening technologies are emerging as an alternative to the printing press, offering a number of variations and ongoing development. FM screening departs from conventional printing methods by its attention to not only the size but the positioning of dots. Although graininess is common, FM screening provides detailed reproductions. FM screening also offers high quality print without overwhelming files. Improvements in FM screening methods under consideration include noise reduction in images, screen integration within an image and dot enlargement. FM screening's movement toward lower-resolutions may soon put it in reach of color desktop printers and color copiers.
