Hearing is believing

Article Abstract:

Audio experts are working to improve the quality of streaming media by concentrating on how audio will sound to users, given existing transmission constraints, rather than on the audio data stream itself. For example, Israeli sound engineers Meir Shashua and Gilead Keren are using techniques derived from the science of psychoacoustics, which focuses on the relationship between sound waves and the perception of them by the brain of a listener. Such techniques trick the human ear into perceiving that sound quality as better than it actually is.

Designing for e-commerce success

Article Abstract:

Web designers who previously did not feel compelled to be concerned with e-commerce or Web retailing are now finding that they need an ability to design online storefronts because even the smallest business sites on the Web have store or 'store-like' components. A successful site needs to be attractive, but it also needs to be efficiently functional. Good store design requires a knowledge of customer behavior in addition to traditional principles of Web design.

Square pegs and round holes

Article Abstract:

Since the Internet was originally created, during the early 1960s, as a defense-oriented peer-to-peer communications network, its structure continues to favor the employment of a peer-to-peer approach to Web-based marketing and services. The growth registered by such online auction sites as eBay Inc is driven by a reliance on user-to-user communication, as does the success of online music services such as Napster.
