How to get a good scan

Article Abstract:

Creating a quality scan requires knowledge about how scanning works. It is important to use the sharpest original image available. Photographs with a broad, even distribution of gray values scan the clearest. The format of the original affects the scan's quality; black-and-white prints or slides generally produce the best images. A 4-bit scanner which reads only 16 shades of gray can handle line art or scans that will be produced on a laser printer, but a 6-bit scanner reading 64 grays or an 8-bit scanner capable of capturing 256 levels of gray do a much finer job with a photograph. There is a formula used to determine appropriate scanning resolution: screen ruling (lines per inch) multiplied by 1.25 multiplied by final size divided by original size. After having successfully scanned and adjusted the photograph, the file must be saved in a TIFF, EPS or similar file format.
