Article Abstract:

One of the topics discussed at the May 1996 International World Wide Web Conference in Paris was the future evolution of the HTML 1.0 standard, in the context of the numerous non-standard enhancements in existence. One proposed solution to close the gap between the existing standard and the non-standard enhancements is to add features to HTML 1.1 that would let viewers query Web sites to find out what non-standard tags are in use and whether the users' browsers support those tags. As a corollary, a registry of tag names and definitions would be compiled to reduce duplication. HTML tags proposed included one that provides a detailed description of the entire font or subset of fonts used in documents. The Portable Network Graphics format for high-quality graphics received support, and participants also recommended limiting the number of items on a Web page to five nuggets to sustain viewers' interest.

Article Abstract:

The International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press and Postpress's (CIP3's) proposed Print Production Format (PPF) standard is gaining attention because it expands the definition of document production to include post-prepress work such as cutting, inking and folding. PPF came about because German press giant Heidelberg wanted a standard that could coordinate and rationalize printing and postprinting procedures paralleling the way PostScript standardized prepress processes. PPF is based on PostScript because the goal of PPF is to reduce data redundancy and it made sense to piggyback onto PostScript since it is the de facto standard. PPF is useful because it provides the first context in which one, coherent control system is able to be extended from the graphic designer to the bindery.
