Liberal arts and design education today

Article Abstract:

A liberal arts education is essential in the training of graphic designers because the liberal arts represent an integration of concept and technique. The beliefs and values of our culture are encompassed in the liberal arts. The relationships between a client and a designer, and between liberal arts and the world both demonstrate the connection between reality and idea. Surveys have shown strong support for liberal arts education in design schools, but students see less need for it than faculty. Thus, designers should show visible support for liberal arts education.

Between progress and art

Article Abstract:

Design schools must find a way to combine human spirit, intuition and experience with the objectification brought about by the new technological media. Most elementary schools ignore art education or relegate it to a minor portion of a student's training. Educators fail to see that integration of art in all disciplines is needed in a comprehensive curriculum. Design school students enter without a basic philosophy about the importance of art. Frequently, high-tech equipment replaces basic design courses. Technology alone offers visual experiences with no context.

"Very nice." (advice to beginning graphic designers) (Column)

Article Abstract:

Excellent graphic design work is challenging and unique. The purpose of art education is to teach the students to think, but they should question how they are taught to think. Are they being taught to be artists, tradesmen or like other graphic artists? Designers should communicate with and learn from each other and then do something completely different from what others are doing.
