Looking at pictures; determining quality in your own time

Article Abstract:

The methodology used to determine quality contemporary art from lesser art is analyzed. Art that has longevity, that is capable of continually conjuring up memories, qualifies as superior art. A picture that constantly gives the viewer a new meaning each time it is viewed surpasses one that does not. Another suggested method to determine an art piece's aesthetic value is to buy it and place it in a prominent place in the home. If it continues to impose itself upon the viewer, it was a good buy. Other methods to determine an art piece's aesthetic value are included.

A charmer with a photo fixation: Ray Charles White

Article Abstract:

Ray Charles White is a Canadian born photographer, now living in New York City. His Canadian background influences his work, causing him to approach his subject from a slightly different angle than expected and to avoid traditional reverence. He has the ability to capture his subjects swiftly before they become self-conscious. Ansel Adams, with whom he studied in 1980-1981, and David Hockney have influenced his work. Some of his photographs are shown.

Roy Lichtenstein

Article Abstract:

Roy Lichtenstein devoted a monumental amount of planning, work and revision to his 68- by 32-foot 'Mural with Blue Brushstroke,' on a wall of Mid-Manhattan's Equitable Building. A book, sharing the mural's name, by Calvin Tompkins and Bob Adelman documents the mural's creation. A year's preparation preceded the actual construction of the mural, which was begun in Nov 1985 and completed six weeks later.
