More power to you

Article Abstract:

Paragon Concepts' $395 Nisus combines sophisticated features with annoying drawbacks. The indexing feature allows a user to index all or specific occurrences of a word as well as cross-referencing indexed words. Nisus contains strong drawing tools that can create shapes, rules in several widths and fill patterns. The graphic is attached to the closest paragraph of text, making it occasionally difficult to keep the graphic in one place, and cannot extend across columns. The advanced search and replace function recognizes word patterns like duplicate words, but requires use of a complex command language that is poorly documented. Paragraph indents, margins and line leading cannot be specified on style sheets. Kerning, tracking and outline processing are nonexistent. Formatted text can only be exported to Pagemaker. All other exported text must go as ASCII files.

The latest word on Word: Microsoft Word 4.0

Article Abstract:

Word 4.0 from Microsoft is a polished product and an excellent deal. The $395 program - $75 for an upgrade from Word 3.0 - requires a Macintosh Plus, SE or II and two floppy disk drives. Word 4.0 includes a spreadsheet-like table feature that simplifies table setup and a Commands option that permits customization of menus. Greater control over positioning and flowing text around objects has improved page layout capabilities. The most innovative change is that Word 4.0 permits defining the specifications of a table in a dialog box instead of by individual tab stops on Word's ruler. A new Page View feature permits displaying and editing of a document as it will appear when printed. Useful enhancements include a word count feature and a feature that substitutes typographic open and close quotation marks for the Macintosh's typewriter-style ones.
