Page layout for beginners

Article Abstract:

PFS: First Publisher, $99 from Software Publishing, is a page makeup program for IBM PC-compatible microcomputers. The program is aimed at desktop publishing novices; it includes easy-to-understand menus, abundant help messages, and an excellent manual. PFS: First Publisher can import text files and graphics, and it supports many popular dot-matrix, laser, and ink-jet printers. The program's simplicity and low price are offset by limitations in text handling and placement, however, as well as slow performance and printing. PFS: First Publisher is recommended for uncomplicated personal printing or in-house publications applications.

A frame of mind

Article Abstract:

Mindwrite 1.0 ($295), from Mindwork Software, is an outliner and an organizer combined with a full-featured word processor. The program, which is not copy protected, requires 512Kbytes, as well as either an 800Kbyte internal or an external disk drive. Some features of the outliner are described as 'tricky' until you are familiar with the program. A more important drawback is that Mindwrite does not export files to page makeup programs; files have to be saved in a way that loses outlining levels and labels. Nevertheless, if an outliner integrated with a word processor sounds useful, Mindwrite is recommended.
