Pow! Zap! Whizzz! the pluses of comic relief

Article Abstract:

Cartoons are useful in desktop publishing output because by combining both a visual and text message they give ideas a greater impact. Mindscape's $79.95 Comicworks package provides easy-to-use tools for the creation of cartoons and other graphics output and includes two disks of ready-made art for those with little artistic experience. Available for the 512Kbyte Macintosh or for the Macintosh Plus, the program offers a Mac-type interface and has a wide range of features, including many layout options, various patterning and special effects tools, overlaying of images, and several editing tools. An additional disk of 24 templates for publications and forms is available for $19.95.

Beyond the warranty

Article Abstract:

Purchasers of desktop publishing software should consider customer support. Customer support can be important: find out what is available, get the best support that you can, and make use of it. Most software companies offer customer service by telephone; some provide newsletters that contain product information, information about company policies, and how-to information. Purchasing from a dealer who can offer training or assistance can be advantageous, and user groups are a popular forum for information exchange. Find out about update policies. A customer-support checklist is included.

Everyone's key to laser power

Article Abstract:

Laser Control 2.2, created by Insight Development Corp, provides a laser driver for the HP Laserjet and compatibles. A printer driver must have a driver that matches one of seven emulations: Diablo 630, Epson MX-80, IBM Graphics Printer, Qume Sprint 5, or an NEC, 3550, 5510, or 7710. The product, which costs $150, requires 128Kbytes, two disk drives, and DOS 2.0 or later. The product seems high priced.
