Presentation Technologies Montage FR1

Article Abstract:

Presentation Technologies' $5,995 Montage FR1 slide recorder earns three stars in a possible five-star rating for both the Apple Macintosh and the IBM PC models. Both models are easy to install and operate; both produce slides adequate for viewing at mid-range. The Macintosh recorder produced slides as good as the Procolor for the Mac, the top-rated model in this price range. However, it is inconsistent in its reproduction of text and graphics. An X-Y axis line on one bar-chart slide did not reproduce. Word spacing was too loose. Yellow overlaid text was slightly overexposed. The Montage for IBM produced average image quality but slides had dull colors and poor rendering of red and yellow text in a slide title. Montage FR1 uses the same software as the Lasergraphics Rascol-II and Mac-LFR. Hardware requirements are an Apple Macintosh Plus, SE, II, or IIx; or IBM PC, XT, AT, or compatibles.

Matrix Slidewriter

Article Abstract:

The $11,795 Matrix Instruments Slidewriter slide recorder for the Apple Macintosh rates five out of five stars. It offers the clearest images at midrange or long-range distance of any of 11 recorders under $12,000 tested. Images were as clear as the commercially produced duplicates. The machine is easy to install and operate but costs about twice as much as others reviewed. Slidewriter includes the same software as the company's ProColor model but has better hardware. The recorder accepts PICT, Scrapbook or 24-bit TIFF file slides but requires use of Matrix's Conductor software to record them. Slidewriter runs on Macintosh Plus, SE, II or IIX. It includes URW Courier, Times, and Helvetica outline fonts. A $11,795 model for the IBM PC has the same hardware as Slidewriter but a model was not available for evaluation.

Matrix Procolor

Article Abstract:

Matrix Instruments' $6,495 Procolor slide recorder for Apple Macintosh offers the best color and type quality of Mac recorders in its price range; however, slide text loses it sharp edge when viewed from a large-audience range. This problem was common to other mid-price recorders tested. Procolor is easy to install and operate and earns four stars in a five-star rating system. Its twin model for the IBM PC has the same hardware but earns only a two-star rating because of software and documentation difficulties not present in the Mac version. Files are easily recorded using Matrix's Conductor software, which permits batch recording. The recorder comes with URW Courier, Times, and Helvetica outline fonts. An Apple Macintosh Plus, SE, II or IIx is required.
