Graph Expo: vendors weary in the Windy City

Article Abstract:

Many vendors highlighted new products and technologies at the Graph Expo 98 trade show in Chicago. Publishing Solutions' new G-NIC II PCI card brings Gigabit Ethernet to the Macintosh platform to speed file transfers. Agfa's CP 501 is a PostScript 3.0 raster image processor (RIP) for its Chromapress line, which uses a 500MHz Compaq microcontroller and runs under Windows NT. Many vendors showed digital proofing and computer-to-plate (CTP) technologies. Epson displayed a six-color, 1,400-by-720-dpi printer/proofer that takes wide-format media on rolls or cut sheets and does not yet have a name. Polaroid's DryJet II 2820 is a four-up color-proofing system. German-based Best Software has introduced its BestColor RIP in the US. Color-management hardware displayed at the show included GretagMacbeeth's ColorEye XTH, a handheld spectrophotometer priced at $7,900 that can measure color on curved surfaces.

Parallel publishing

Article Abstract:

The embrace of the World Wide Web platform brings with it the challenge of aligning print and online workflows for electronic and print publishers. People Magazine integrates the Quark Publishing System with its Mac-based print production through its database server, which yields workflow management, file tracking and simultaneous layout and copyfitting. Montana's Bozeman Daily Chronicle employs a small Web staff that begins work after final edits. All story files are marked with four-line slugs for clarity and matching. Trader Publications uses PALOS Software's Photo Ad LayOut System for catalog and photo-ad automation. Product is then tracked to Web workflow through the Informix database, where AdLink converts it for the Web catalog. Smith and Hawkins employed WaveLink Media for help with Web development.
