Running the tech doc race; Sun workstation and the fastest Mac meet at the finish line

Article Abstract:

Until recently, the only choice for creating a long or technical document on a desktop system was a UNIX workstation because microcomputers lacked the speed, memory and sophisticated software required. The increased power of newer microcomputers and the declining prices of workstations widens the choices available, however. An Apple Macintosh IIfx based on a 40-MHz Motorola 68040 microprocessor and a Sun Microsystems SPARCstation IPC running UNIX are compared processing a technical document using Frame Technology publishing software: FrameMaker for the Mac 2.1 and FrameMaker for Sun (SunView version) 2.1, respectively. The SPARCstation IPC ran much faster than the Macintosh IIfx in the tests, but the Macintosh was easier to use. The SPARCstation IPC is designed specifically for networking, but for the Macintosh networking is an afterthought. For many the choice of platform will depend on the software selected.

The Mac/PC file exchange cookbook; tried-and-true recipes from the Publish kitchen

Article Abstract:

Many possible Apple Macintosh/IBM PC file-exchange scenarios are possible, including the following procedures. To move files from Microsoft Windows 3.0 to Mac, use Windows 3.0's new Encapsulated PostScript option under the Print Setup menu, exporting a Windows page as an Encapsulated PostScript graphic rather than a typical bit-mapped screen shot. Directions for making such a file transfer are included. In another scenario, instructions are given on moving Mac Illustrator EPS to PC CGM. In order to make this transfer Mac Illustrator 1.9.5 or later, Corel DRAW, and Mac to PC transfer hardware/software are needed.
