Sound advice

Article Abstract:

Computer presentations are using more audio now that it is becoming cheaper and easier to use, but presenters must choose more than one of various product to do all of the tasks required. Macs are equipped with basic hardware for processing audio but PCs require additional hardware and software. Sound processing first requires a means of getting the sound to the computer, such as a microphone for live sound, a CD-ROM drive for premastered sound or Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) devices. CD-ROM adds high-quality sound in manageable sized files. MIDI is complex and is not recommended except for musicians or very patient users. Designers also need presentation software that is able to control the types of sound input they are using. The easiest way to add sound is to use prerecorded sound clips. After adding sound it should be edited by using a sound editor. Hardware and software recommendations for Macs and PCs are included.
