Storage strategies; everyone needs more storage, but with so many options, the choice can be daunting

Article Abstract:

A guide to storage options is presented. Technologies described and discussed include internal hard drives, external hard drives, hard disk add-in cards, removable cartridge systems, magneto optical disks, tape backup, WORM (write-once, read many) drives, and super floppy drives. Storage technologies are matched with their typical uses or capabilities such as secondary storage, backup, archiving or portability. An estimate of the cost per Mbyte for each technology is provided. Super floppy disk drives, which are new and not yet standardized, are described as a particularly interesting and potentially useful development. Insite Peripherals Inc and Brier Technologies Inc have already introduced super floppies that can store 21Mbytes and other products are said to be under development that will store as many as 40Mbytes, or even 80Mbytes. Such devices would combine all the desirable features of other storage products including backup, storage, archiving and portability.

Storage vendors wage war

The price war among storage vendors, which has led to price cutting almost daily, benefits buyers because of lower prices. The industry chaos brought about by mergers, consolidations, layoffs and the like, however, are leading to delays in product shipment and shortages in drive supplies. Iomega's 1GB Jaz drives and SuQuest's 1.3GB SyJet, for example, are reaching the market in trickles because of component shortages, production problems and unsteady distribution channels. The much hyped 4.6GB Pinnacle Apex is way behind its Dec 1995 shipment schedule. Conner Peripherals has just been acquired by its rival Seagate Technology for $1.4 billion in stock while Olympus cut the prices of its PowerMO230 drive by 17 percent and is fighting SyQuest with a trade-up promotion. SyQuest, on its part, announced a $33.8 million 1st qtr 1996 net loss and will lay off 60 percent of its employees.
