The Next alternative: Framemaker and the Next

Article Abstract:

The NeXT computer is being touted as a breakthrough in desktop publishing, yet the $9,995 unit falls short of the expectations of most desktop publishers. The most glaring hardware shortfall is the omission of a built-in floppy drive. A plus is the unit's easy-to-learn operating system. Software availability is an even greater handicap. Currently the only page layout program available for the NeXT is Frame Technology's FrameMaker. This $995 package has been around for awhile, but its implementation for the NeXT is buggy and not suited to either inexperienced or infrequent users. NeXT needs a faster hard drive, a floppy drive of some sort, and more software before it can be a serious contender in the desktop publishing arena.

Directory assistance

Article Abstract:

Xerox's Ventura Publisher version 1.1 and a PostScript printer can be used to create a a 36- to 52-page city directory for less than $200. The advertisements and company listings that constitute the city directory are input using a word processing program from which Ventura Publisher can import files. Shorter entries can be input directly to Ventura Publisher. File importing and clean-up are described in step-by-step detail. Placement and paste-up of the ads and listings are facilitated, if Ventura Publisher's paragraph-tagging feature is used. The tagging will also facilitate subsequent revisions to and updates of the city directory.

Once the macro has been set up, users simply move the cursor to the beginning of the address on the top of the letter, call up the macro name, specify a label, and print it. The steps users must take to produce the macro are listed.
