The business type

Article Abstract:

Hewlett-Packard's LaserJet Series III laser printer prints eight pages per minute and contains eight built-in outline fonts. It automatically scales its fonts to the size you need. There are over a dozen character sets to choose from that can fulfill legal, publishing, and European-language needs. Patented Resolution Enhancement produces sharper type than 300-dpi Postscript printers that cost twice as much. Print quality is generally suitable for camera-ready art. A $275 AppleTalk port allows the machine to work with Macintosh microcomputers. The LaserJet Series III's available font selection is limited compared with PostScript compatible printers. The Printer Control Language (PCL) Level 5 page description language is limited in scope when compared with PostScript. The list price is $2,395.

Production copiers

Article Abstract:

Xerox's $130,000 DocuColor 40, Scitex America's $199,000 Spontane and Canon U.S.A.'s $75,000 CLC 1000 color copier-printers provide many of the features offered by short-run digital presses. The DocuColor 40 provides 400-dpi toner-based resolution rates, 40-ppm simplex output speeds and numerous digital front end options. The Spontane also offers 40-ppm simplex output production and the system differs from the DocuColor in terms of RIP hardware and software design. The Spontane can also be integrated with Scitex's entire line of prepress systems. The CLC 1000 offers only 31-ppm simplex output rates, but the 14-ppm duplex rates are comparable to more expensive systems. The CLC 1000's sheet capacity of 5,250 is more than twice the 1,500 offered by the Spontane and DocuColor.
