Envision It: Although useful for dealing with CAD files, Envision It has little to offer mainstream publishers

Article Abstract:

The $399 Envision It software package from Envision Solutions Technology is a poor tool for bit-map-to-vector data conversion when compared to competing packages. The software is most useful to desktop publishers handling computer-aided design (CAD) files, as most import and export capabilities relate to CAD programs. It does, though, import such desktop publishing image file formats as TIFF and PCX. Other features include the ability to translate CAD formats into more conventional graphics formats and the limited Vector Editor CAD program for modifying translated and scanned files. Major drawbacks include few fonts, limited support for printers and displays, non-mainstream icons and menu layout, slower speed, inferior output quality and lesser ability to discern curves and small details compared to competing programs.

FontMinder: 'drag and drop' font management for Windows finally arrives

Article Abstract:

The $79.95 FontMinder software package from Ares Software Corp is an easy-to-use and extremely useful tool font manager for the Microsoft Windows graphical user interface. The software can handle up to 2,000 fonts in both Adobe PostScript Type 1 and TrueType formats. Features include installation of fonts for automatic downloading, automatic listing of all available fonts in a Master Font Library window, drag-and-drop installation to an Installed Fonts window and grouping of fonts into 'font packs.' Loading of single font packs for a particular application speeds loading of Windows and other programs. The only drawback noted is the inability to mix Type 1 and TrueType fonts in a single font pack.
