PC word processing takes off: five PC word processors aim for the page makeup heights

Article Abstract:

Five word processing software packages are evaluated. Word Perfect 5.0 ($60), from WordPerfect Corp, is rated as an excellent product for simple layout of sales reports and newsletters. Manuscript 2.0 ($75), from Lotus Development Corp, offers organizational tools and speed for users who create long illustrated documents. The size of Manuscript requires users to copy 12 disks onto the hard drive and uses 4Mbytes. Microsoft Pageview ($49.95) is a utility for Microsoft Word 4.0 that lets you see page layout before printing. Page format adjustments in Pageview are easy. Total Word 1.01 ($495), from Lifetree, is valuable to scientists and engineers because it has a technical symbol library with over 250 special characters. Officewriter 6.0 ($495) has little to offer in typographic controls, graphics, or page preview. Page Perfect ($495) attempts to combine word processing and graphics rather unsuccessfully.

Reviews: Corel Ventura 7

Article Abstract:

Corel's Ventura 7.0 desktop publishing software offers exceptional typography, formatting, graphics and core page layout capabilities. New items include enhanced tables, object grouping, irregularly shaped frames, multiple open documents, nonprinting guidelines, character tags and master pages. Ventura 7.0, compatible with Windows 95 and NT, also enables HTML document publishing. Other strong points include a context-sensitive, customizable interface and new 'modeless' cursor, which is programmed to match tools to targeted objects. Corel Ventura 7.0 is superior to its predecessors at devising brief, design-intensive materials such as ads, promotional documents and brochures. The Navigator feature moves the user through the record, tracking table of contents, cross-references, master pages, and indexes. Ventura 7.0 has a street price is $500 and a list price of $895.
