Article Abstract:

Style is emphasized over readability in typography design. One school of type designers rarely reads the results of their work, believing that legibility is a function of experience rather than design, and that the more difficult to read, the more enjoyable. Herbert Spencer's research into readability looked at reading eye movements, effect on reading , speed, comprehension rate, and letter differentiation of various typographical factors. Others find the scientific approach antithetical to the creative approach. A melding of creativity and good writing would produce the best results.
