Word processing workout: exercising the design potential of six low-end programs

Article Abstract:

Professional graphic designers asked to use and evaluate six low-cost word processing and page layout programs reveal that the software packages can accomplish most of what designers ask of them, though some design concepts have to be forgone because of the package limitations. The programs evaluated include Lotus Development Corp's Ami Professional 1.2, NBI Inc's Legacy 1.1 and Power Up! Software Corp's Express Publisher 2.0 for IBM PC-compatible microcomputers. Additional programs evaluated include Paragon Concept Inc's Nisus 3.06, Aldus Corp's Personal Press and Wordperfect Corp's WordPerfect for the Apple Macintosh. Two pages of a prototype newsletter are created for each evaluation using exactly the same text and graphic files. Output is produced in Linotronic format.

Letting it all hang out

Article Abstract:

Hanging punctuation, which typically involves using periods or quotation marks that 'hang' outside the left and right margins, provides a way for a document's publisher to achieve a more balanced look in a justified block of text. Because periods and quotation marks take up so little space and have so little weight, they can cause margins to seem offset from line to line. Placing the punctuation outside the text block has the effect of aligning the first and last text characters of all of the lines, which evens the margins. It also yields a more consistent 'color' balance by evening the overall proportion of black type to white space in a paragraph. How to use hanging punctuation with QuarkXPress and with Adobe PageMaker is discussed.
