You take the high res and I'll takethe low res

Article Abstract:

The Open Prepress Interface (OPI) standard is providing a convenient scheme for speeding up the processing of photo files and boosting prepress productivity. A wide variety of image processing, print spooler, and printer support software solutions are currently available. The standard was launched in the late 1980s by Aldus Corp as a means of effecting the merger of images scanned in proprietary formats with standard PostScript files. The key to the enhanced efficiency involves utilizing a low-resolution proprietary version of the image that can be utilized for desktop composition. This file swap results in a huge savings in terms of CPU bottlenecks and network processing time. When the printing is sent to the PostScript printer, a high-resolution version of the image is printed. Typically, this low-high resolution exchange can be effected with any EPS or TIFF files. Although OPI solutions generally range in price from $4,000 to $10,000, they can be worthwhile due to the increases in efficiency they facilitate.

International Report

Article Abstract:

Source Developpement, a French company, announces a flat computer console called the Modula Executive. The device will cost about $3,800. Modula Executive is 29 inches wide, 20 inches long and about a half an inch thick. Its keys are pressure sensitive, and an LCD touch screen eliminates the need for the mouse. It is available now for PCs, and a Macintosh version is being developed. Modula Executive is ergonomically unusual because its keyboard is placed above its screen, which is in the foreground. For more information about Modula Executive, contact Source Developpement's US affiliate, Source Innovation, at 310-988-6574. Meanwhile, CoDesCo of Oststeinbek, Germany, is identified as a major European clearinghouse for QuarkXPress XTensions. For example, an extension called DiHyphXT, from Holland's Van Gennep-Media Automation, is useful for problems involving hyphenation, especially in European languages.

Buddy, can you spare some time?

Article Abstract:

PLP is least expensive laser printer available for the Mac, but it has some serious drawbacks for desktop publishers. Pages are printed in Quickdraw rather than Postscript, and your Mac does all the image processing. Also, PLP can't be used with a PC or compatible and it is slow. The unit has only one MB of memory and that is not enough. A hard disk is needed, too. Fonts are limited as well. One plus is that graphics from Macdraw actually print faster on the PLP. The conclusion is that the PLP's lower price does not make this such a great deal.
