Close encounters of the wrong kind

Article Abstract:

The UK saw the opening of 267 new multiplex cinema screens in 1998, according to a report by Dodona Research. The report forecasts that there will be 632 more screens by 2000 than the 1,725 open in 1998. Admissions per screen are likely to decline, having a negative impact on operators' profits. It is likely that some operators will withdraw from the market, with some cinemas being closed down. The possible purchase by Paramount Pictures of Universal's 50% stake in United Cinemas International could spark off significant competition between cinema operators.
