Crowded house

Article Abstract:

The DTZ Debenham Thorpe conference discussed a number of issues relating to future UK housing requirements. It was predicted the demand for housing will stabilize although house building may increase by 13% during 1998-2003. Housing associations had taken over from councils who build very few new houses. The population of the UK is predicted to increase to 51.5 million by 2001, from 48.5 million in 1993. It is estimated some 4.4 million new houses will be required by 2016.It may prove difficult to build 60% of the new houses on brownfield sites as proposed by the Labour government.

No ducks in Drake

Article Abstract:

The development of a covered shopping centre in Plymouth, UK, is expected to increase business for retailers and help the local economy. Construction of the Drake Circus Shopping Centre is due to start towards the end of 1999. Large firms have been reluctant to locate to Plymouth because of the perceived lack of skilled labour and unavailability of quality commercial and retail properties. The Drake Circus Shopping centre will provide up to 400,000 square feet of retail space.

Thirst that can't be quenched

Article Abstract:

The pub property market in Dublin, Ireland, remains very strong, with around 18 pubs having been sold in the first half of 1996. Most are owner-occupied, but there is very strong demand for licences, as no new ones are currently being issued in Ireland. Some landlords are even purchasing pubs out of town so that they can transfer the licence to a city pub. Dublin already has more than 800 pubs, and its nightlife is thriving.
