Exorcising blight

Article Abstract:

Several interested groups are calling on the UK government to resolve the problems caused by compulsory purchase orders (CPO) and to develop a fair system of compensation. Some 63% of occupiers are unhappy with the CPO system. The Property Industry Group has been set up to lobby the government for a simpler compulsory purchase system and for the quicker payment of compensation which reflects the hardship felt by those under threat of a compulsory order. It has been pointed out people living along a proposed scheme may not be able to sell their properties even if they are unaffected.

Blight relief

Article Abstract:

The UK government is seeking to deal with the problem of contaminated land by establishing a system which identifies the most dangerous types of contamination and imposes as much remediation as is required to make these sites safe for the purpose for which they are intended to be used. However, the DOE's draft guidance on this issue has received a mixed response, with local authorities expressing concern about their role in implementing the identification and remediation of contaminated land.
