Fine words, little action

Article Abstract:

Some observers have claimed the North East England draft economic strategy, issued by the regional development agency (RDA), does not explain how its targets will be achieved. Many people had been hopeful the introduction of a RDA would help the economy of the North East to improve to the level of the rest of the European Union. Members of the RDA have promised the actual strategy document will include more clearly defined objectives. Some observers point out the 'One NorthEast' document compares badly with the draft strategy from the North West development agency's economic plan.

Streamlined finances

Article Abstract:

British Waterways is hoping to link with institutional investors and banks in an effort to attract the private finance required to exploit its 250 million pounds sterling property assets. It will focus on key sites next to the canals that pass through almost every town in the UK and through target areas for redevelopment. In a new approach to public-private partnership, the public sector will continue to own the assets following redevelopment and will play an active part in regeneration. British Waterways will be able to purchase neighbouring sites to create larger schemes.

Parting the clouds to polish the silver lining

Article Abstract:

Liverpool has been dubbed the most economically deprived English city, but is making improvements. A growth industry is ship repair. Another is higher education, which has turnover 300 million pounds sterling locally, and will expand further in future. The image of Liverpool has been indelibly affected by its militant government between 1984-1986.
