Fun ... without the sun

Article Abstract:

Many leisure developers are setting up operations in Lancashire (Lancs) and Cumbria to capitalize on their reputation as important areas for tourism in the UK. A 70 million pounds sterling leisure development is planned in the vicinity of Blackburn, Lancs, which will included restaurants, a bowling alley and a cinema. Several small hotels and a few larger establishments in Lancs have changed hands. A new 100 million pounds sterling holiday centre was opened at Whinfell Forest, Cumbria, in Spring 1997. Whitbread has plans to invest 200,000 pounds sterling into public houses in Kendal, Cumbria.

Pride and prejudice

Article Abstract:

It has been predicted some 1.3 billion pounds sterling was spent by homosexuals visiting the UK during 1998. Gays and lesbians have recounted how they were not permitted to stay in some British hotels because the management objected to their sexuality. The US company BTA have recognized the potential of the homosexual market and are using their expertise in the UK, by giving lectures to the hospitality industry on the gay market. Some observers have suggested UK operators are frightened of alienating the majority of their customers by targeting the gay market.

Article Abstract:

Barclaycall, a subsidiary of Barclays Bank offering telephone banking services, decided to situate its third call centre at Doxford International business park in Sunderland, England. This site offered the advantage of being an established location, and also offered a high quality environment. The company was particularly attracted to the high levels of security and to the way in which the landscaping of the facility was managed.
