Global approach: Innovation in office design has allowed BA staff to change the way they work

Article Abstract:

British Airways' new headquarters, Waterside, combines skillful landscaping and innovative building design. Its Norwegian architecture features Canadian wood, French stone and Japanese switchgear. Internally the floorplates of each of the buildings can be individually configured, and the design concept works on the assumption that many staff spend time out of the office. A feature of the interior is a cobblestoned 'street', enclosed with a glazed roof, and featuring refreshment areas linked by overhead bridges.

Technology has the potential to intensify the changing balance between employer and employee, according to architectural firm Foster & Partners project director Huw Thomas. He predicts a shift towards buildings providing information about their capabilities, being able to communicate with users and potential users. Space requirements will become more task-oriented, and this will lead to the end of conventional types of property tenure.
