Going to town on housing

Article Abstract:

Representatives of the county council in Surrey, England, fear that by 2016 around 1,250ha of green belt land will need to be built upon in order to fulfill government proposals. The Department of Environment's paper published in autumn 1996 projected that Surrey would be required to build around 50,000 houses by 2006 and 32,000 by 2016. The council will need to build on land designated for other use and green belt land to meet government demands. Competition for land has given the local authority bargaining power in discussions with developers in order to gain facilities for the community.

Upsurge in Midtown

Article Abstract:

Some industry experts suggest the area known as Midtown, which comprises of Holborn, Clerkenwell and Covent Garden, London, England, does not have sufficient retail and leisure outlets to serve prospective occupiers. Yet Midtown is becoming more popular. The market for residential units is growing in Midtown, with Covent Garden particularly being in demand. The office market is experiencing rapid growth due to good availability and competitive rents. Rents have increased by around 50%. Headquarters tenants, moving into Midtown, will help to ensure its continuing success.
