Head of Labour's reform school

Article Abstract:

Greater London Group Director and Academic Tony Travers suggests the introduction of Regional Development Agencies is likely to increase competition between the regions, leading to unnecessary expenditure. He predicts some of the traditional Labour councils will object to the Best Value policy. Travers welcomes government plans for transport but he feels they have made a mistake by not setting out a clear timetable for their introduction. Travers has been asked to look into all issues relating to cities and local government by the Labour government.

Scared stiff

Article Abstract:

Some industry experts are forecasting office rents in the City, London, England, will not reach 60 pounds sterling per sq ft and rental growth is likely to be around 15% rather than 20% as previously predicted. Many of the large multinational banking institutions are cutting back on their plans to expand and pulling out of deals for more space. Some observers have suggested around 40,000 employees in the financial sector will lose their jobs and of these 75% are based in the City. Many of the banks have been affected by the financial crisis in Asia.

The leaks in the hull of a Tory flagship

Article Abstract:

The town centre office and retail property sectors in the London borough of Wandsworth remain very weak, even though the borough is seen by many in the Conservative party as an example to others. Wandsworth now has a poor image, and has been unable to attract large employers. Merton has a lot of vacant industrial space, most of which is of poor quality.
