Industry refuses to be bulldozed

Article Abstract:

The DETR is due to meet with rating professionals in February 1999 to hear their concerns about the Rating (Valuation) Bill which is already proceeding through parliament. The Valuation Office Agency is concerned that a large number of cases will come to court in light of the Anston case, with building owners likely to appeal for lower rates on buildings in a poor state of repair. The bill aims to ensure rental values are based on buildings which are in a 'reasonable' condition and that rents might only be lowered if the building cannot be economically repaired.

'Yes' vote unlocks investment

Article Abstract:

There is growing confidence in the residential property market in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where a strong rise in house prices is anticipated. It is likely that similar growth will be seen in the commercial property market. Observers believe that the key growth areas could be offices, as many companies set up call-centre operations in Northern Ireland, and leisure, as efforts are made to attract tourists. However, there are only limited opportunities for investors, with the market lacking stock and prices being very strong.
