The fast food industry was worth 2.7 billion pounds sterling in 1993, comprising 18.2% of the market for eating out. McDonald's has spent more than one billion pounds sterling on the UK market. day. McDonald's is now diversifying its locations, with the focus on alternative spaces that allow for the best use of square footage. Unusual locations include a football stadium, ferries, and London's Trocadero virtual reality park. The other segments in the UK fast-food market are pizza and pasta; fish and chips, and chicken.

Completion of Plymouth's first multiplex leisure park is expected at Easter, 1998. ASM Properties has planning permission to build a 12-screen UCI cinema complex, a bowling alley, and various eating establishments. Area roads will be developed to improve access. Leisure operator Virgin is also committed to building a 15-screen multiplex on the outskirts of the city. The two entertainment complexes mark the beginning of leisure and retail development in Plymouth.

Whiteladies Road has been dubbed 'party city' following the arrival of an abundance of bars, restaurants and pubs, including Iguana, Hullabaloo, and Pierre Victoire. Marstons, Discovery Inns, Whitbread, Scottish and Newcastle and Allied Domecq are among those already developing or planning new outlets in the area.
