Automotive industry; Searching for speed

Article Abstract:

U.S. auto manufacturing industry can now build assembly plants for around US$400 million instead of the historical cost of $1 billion. The new plants can be written off with more ease, which makes site election decisions more flexible and short-term. The cheaper plants depend on suppliers who would create larger sub-assemblies, just not parts. This flexibility enables the companies to compete more aggressively by offering made-to-order products. The strategy of clustering suppliers around assembly plants is discussed along with other issues.
