Quebec: building partnerships in the Americas

Article Abstract:

Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard believes that Quebec, Canada's success in the 1990s was mainly because of its active support for the North American Free Trade Agreement. The Quebeckers' sure sense of identity made them confident of handling the challenges of globalization. At the same time, Quebec is bent on becoming a premier investment destination. Bouchard stated that the province is committed to building a partnership with the Americas which would center on the benefits of globalization while retaining social and cultural diversity.

Quebec

Article Abstract:

Quebec's flourishing manufacturing industry is attributed to foreign investments. The province has almost 1,200 foreign companies which were attracted by its skilled workforce, quality of life, access to the US market, government backing and infrastructure. As a result, export trade accounted for nearly 30% of its $127.3 billion total gross domestic product in 1995. Quebec's tax policy also attracted research and development laboratories which contribute to its economic growth.
