Radio tunes in to advertising revenue: media groups see commercial radio as a toehold to bigger profits

Article Abstract:

Radio as a commercial industry is much younger than television although the number of stations is continuing to grow. Commercial stations represent just under half of all radio listening and this has attracted the advertisers. It is seen as a growing medium in advertising terms and the amount spent by advertisers has doubled since 1992. Chrysalis is seeking new licenses, and after acquiring Galaxy, a dance station, is relocating from St Pauls in Bristol. Regional radio companies have modest space requirements, although Picadilly Radio has just moved to larger premises.

Nice little parliamentary earners

Article Abstract:

The May 1996 Register of MPs' Interests shows that many UK members of Parliament have links with the property industry, either as directors or advisers. The register requires politicians to declare the source of their earnings over and above the salary they receive as MPs, but it can be interpreted loosely since the obligation relates only to activities in which they are involved in their capacity as MPs. Source further lists MPs' property interests.
