Safety first

Article Abstract:

Office property developers in the UK are becoming increasingly aware of the need to incorporate employee and building safety into the design at a very early stage. Particular attention must be given to employee safety in vulnerable areas, especially car parks. Safety can be enhanced by not enclosing car parks with walls, but using vegetation as a physical barrier. In the design of the building itself, care must be taken to avoid sheltered areas, thus forcing people out of the building envelope.

Matchstick men come home

Article Abstract:

Salford's Quays proposed cultural amenity, The Lowry Centre, is expected to boost the site's profile and attract new business. The site has remained partially empty since its construction, although office tenants are now on the increase. The enhancement of the Metrolink tram system will further stimulate business and relieve space restrictions from limited car parking. Approximately 600,000 square feet of new office space is currently available.

London rents move first

Article Abstract:

The decline in office rental levels in the UK slowed down during 1994, and analysts are now expecting the sector to return to growth. However, this growth will be much lower than the levels seen at the end of the 1980s. Rents have now started to stabilise, although there has been considerable movement in central London. There are many factors affecting rents, and a low vacancy rate does not necessarily mean that rents will rise.
