The 1999 Cannes Film Festival is surveyed. Cannes 97 Festival du Cinquantenaire - celebration de la violence et de la difference

Article Abstract:

The 50th Cannes Film Festival was held in 1997, dominated by themes of violence, although the jury did not select violent films for its awards. Homosexuality was another theme coming into prominence in the world cinema. Films discussed include 'End of Violence' by Wim Wenders, 'Assassin(s)' by Kassovitz, 'Love and Death on Long Island' by Richard Kwietniovski and 'Il Bagno turco' by Alessandro Gassman and Ferzan Ozpetek.
