Contemporary novelists, Josephine Humphreys, Jill McCorkle, and Tina Ansa, are charting an optimistic map of Southern American girlhood, through their depiction of young Southern women as confident, resilient and independent. The differences, among these three writers and their portrayals of female adolescence, especially in terms of social class, age, family structure and location are examined.
