Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts peace accord: institutional features and strategic concerns

Article Abstract:

The pact signed by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end the 25-year conflict with separatist rebels called the Shantibahini in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) was met by both acceptance and rejection from various sectors of the country. While political leaders want the accord to have the desired effect of bringing national stability, the opposition criticized the process and the government's decision not to release the treaty to the public. Moreover, the public are also expressing their concern regarding the constitutionality of the pact.

Export processing zones in Bangladesh

Article Abstract:

The export processing zone (EPZ) in Chittagong has benefited Bangladesh in terms of additional employment and increased foreign exchange earnings. Administration of the zone has improved following several reviews of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority Act. However, the Chittagong EPZ has not succeeded in its objective for technology transfer because most of the companies are labor-intensive. In addition to problems in labor relations and infrastructure, marketing efforts have been inadequate.
