Britain's abandonment of South Arabia: a reassessment

Article Abstract:

Geo-political and socio-economic compulsions of the post World War II-era forced Britain to withdraw from the Gulf of Aden amidst severe criticisms. The British decision was criticised because the strategic analysts considered it as an important base in South Arabia. The base was pivotal in safeguarding Britain's oil routes in the fast changing political environment of the Arab world. The rise of Nasser in Egypt and Yemen's claim over Aden had made Britain's stay in the region increasingly difficult.

The Sino-Indian conflict of 1962 - a test case for India's policy of non-alignment

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the events leading to the Sino-Indian conflict of 1962 revealed that India's policy of non-alignment proved to be impractical. Pres Jawaharlal Nehru was forced to abandon the policy, which he strongly advocated, when the US and the UK refused to provide unconditional help to India after China invaded its northern border. Even non-aligned nations did not side with India during the conflict, suggesting to Nehru that non-alignment is no longer a realistic approach.

Pragmatism and rhetoric in Yemen's policy toward Israel

Article Abstract:

Yemen has traditionally adopted a hostile stance towards Israel. This hostility is now waning, although there are still many obstacles to be overcome before normal relations are established between these two countries. A detailed analysis of the history of relations between Yemen and Israel indicates that Yemen's leaders showed a considerable amount of flexibility, even though they remained unwilling to accept Israel's legitimacy.
