Burma in an international perspective

Article Abstract:

Burma's State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) continues to rule by martial law and resist any international pressure. SLORC is guilty of human rights violations, and detention of political prisoners, including the 1991 Nobel Peace prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. Its international problems relate to opium selling and refugees. SLORC announced political reforms in Oct 1992. Its priorities must include negotiations with the Democratic Alliance of Burma (DAB,) declaration of a cease-fire, release of political prisoners, and acceptance of refugees. It must also install a democratically elected government.

Burma in 1996: one economy, two polities

Article Abstract:

1996 saw the widening disparity between the economic upturn and political troubles in Myanmar. The economy prospered since the failure of the socialist form of government and the failure of the 1988 rebellion. Economic growth was estimated at the range of 5% to 10% and expected to go down to 6% until 1997. On the other hand, questions of political legitimacy has been waged by the State Law and Order Restoration Council and the National League for Democracy against each other since the elections of 1990.

Burma in 2002: a year of transition

Article Abstract:

The release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest marked a dramatic change in the stalemate between Burma's long ruling military State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD). His release was long awaited by the international community as it largely owed to the efforts of United Nations emissary and Malaysian diplomat Tan Sri Razale Ismail.
