"Created Space": Mapping America as poem in Gary Snyder's Mountains and Rivers Without End and Susan Howe's Secret History of the Dividing Line

Article Abstract:

The ways in which Gary Synder's Mountains and Rivers Without End clarifies the extent to which America has struggled to articulate itself as a discursive terrain is examined. It also argues that Snyder's sequence testifies to a pressure at the hearth of American ideology, namely the need to read the land and to interpret it as a landscape.
