Debt rescheduling in less-developed countries: world or regional crisis?

Article Abstract:

Less-developed countries had accumulated a foreign indebtedness of $1.28 trillion in 1990, a 123% increase from 1980. Debt rescheduling has been the subject of empirical studies. Few regional studies have been done and no attempts have been made to differentiate between world regions in studying the financial predictors and debt rescheduling. Evidence on rescheduling for all debtor less developed countries is compared with evidence from each region. Results indicate that the political environment is an important determinant of debt rescheduling.

Growth and foreign indebtedness in developing countries: an empirical study using long-term cross-country data

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the effects of foreign debt on the overall level and rate of economic development in developing countries reveals that foreign loans which are not used for economic development programs can impact their economic situation. An investment regression model is used to analyze the impact of external indebtedness on developing countries' economy. The World Bank classifies developing countries as either severely indebted low-income countries or moderately indebted low-income countries.
