Do Asian values deter popular support for democracy in South Korea?

Article Abstract:

Analyses of East Asia Barometer survey conducted in South Korea show that Confucian Asian values are incompatible with liberal democracy and attachment to those values makes it more difficult to reject authoritarian rule than to accept democracy. These findings suggest that Asian values detract from cultural democratization primarily by keeping the mass public oriented towards the positive features of authoritarian politics.
