Emerging technologies, re-emerging techniques

Article Abstract:

The use of streaming media in teaching French is discussed, with a focus on adapting techniques developed for use with satellite broadcasts. Topics include past use of the Satellite Communications for Learning Association (SCOLA) broadcasts, present use of the Web, lessons from use of SCOLA, differences between satellite broadcasting and Web-casting, and pedagogical modifications needed for use with Web-casting as a distinctive medium.

Writing across English and French: an examination of strategy use

Writing strategies used by undergraduate French majors for composing in their first language (English) and their second language (French) are discussed. Topics include traditional approaches to L2 writing, writing as a process, metacognition, and think-aloud protocols.

The effect of keyboarding on the acquisition of diacritical marks in the foreign language classroom

Article Abstract:

The elaborative encoding required for keyboarding may facilitate acquisition of diacritical marks by beginning French students. Use of pen-and-paper was compared with computer keyboarding of dictated material for recall of accent marks.
