Faith and war eyewitnesses to the Japanese invasion of China: Quebec's Jesuit priests

Article Abstract:

The challenges faced by the Quebec missionary priests by the invasion of the Japanese imperial army into north China and their efforts to protect the Chinese from the Japanese troops within the tradition of their faith and their native province is described. The devout, pietistic world of Quebec Catholicism has withered away and is replaced by a secular, nationalist world.

Naval warfare and the refraction of China's self-strengthening reforms into scientific and technological failure, 1865-1895

Article Abstract:

The inadequacies of late Qing Chinese navy and army was argued to be due to poor armaments, insufficient training, lack of leadership and low morale. The naval warfare and China's inadequacies of the self-strengthening era is reviewed.
